South Molton & Area

South Molton

"The Gateway to Exmoor", South Molton's pseudonym,  is placed on the southern edge of the moor, some 20 minutes from the  Tiverton junction on the M5 in the East, and 20 minutes from Barnstaple  in the West.

Being pleasantly situated not far from both coastal  and inland beauty spots it will suit visitors of all tastes. In close  proximity are forests, moors, rivers and coast, with churches and other  buildings of historical significance. Residents find the quiet charm of  the area attractive and visitors soon experience the sense of civic  pride held by the locals.

South Molton's appeal lies in the pace  that is governed by the seasons and not the clock, and the need for  visitors to relax and shake off the pressure of daily routine before  really understanding and enjoying their time here.  From the parish  church of St. Mary Magdalene, which dominates the skyline, through the  imposing Guildhall which contains the towns Museum and fronts the  Pannier Market (markets on Thursday and Saturday mornings) to the  George Hotel, with its unusual facade, the town is steeped in heritage.

Those visitors wishing to learn more about the town can do no better than  take up the "South Molton Heritage Trail" challenge, which will find  them visiting some 30 places of special interest within the town, and  all within approximately 2 hours. The booklet accompanying the "trail"   says more about the towns' history and is a souvenir to be treasured.
